Virkus confirms: Beyer purchase option is 15 million

At the Borussia Mönchengladbach general meeting, sporting director Roland Virkus spoke about the squad planning for the coming season. The sports director also commented on Jordan Beyer’s personnel and confirmed the amount of the negotiated purchase option.

Loaned to Burnley, probably gone completely from Mönchengladbach in the summer: Jordan Beyer.

Roland Virkus did not have an easy game when he reviewed the past year at the general meeting and spoke about the current sporting situation and the future. Not every one of the 1216 members present apparently shared the assessment that Borussia in 10th place, at least in terms of the table, was playing a stable season, there were heckling and expressions of displeasure.

But Virkus also looked back critically at the past few months. “When you look at the performance, you have to be self-critical, we weren’t always satisfied. We can’t be satisfied if you lose 4-0 in Mainz or 4-1 at Hertha BSC.” This assessment, in turn, met with broad approval from the members, and there was applause.

Virkus emphasized once again that Borussia is currently in the middle of a restructuring process. After the departures of Denis Zakaria, Breel Embolo, Matthias Ginter and Yann Sommer, other regulars will leave the club in the summer with Lars Stindl, Marcus Thuram and Ramy Bensebaini. “There will be a major restructuring and renewal of the squad,” said Virkus, looking ahead to the summer.

“We want to keep the football quality high after the departures of Stindl, Thuram and Bensebaini and add speed, power, scope, tackle strength and intensity to the squad.” The team will be competitive next season, the manager promised. “And we will also find the characters that fit Borussia.” Discussions with potential additions would be held. Among other things, (at least) one central striker should come. “There are a lot of players at the door,” said Virkus, emphasizing: “The club is still a big and attractive address.”

New hierarchy: Weigl as “important leader”

Julian Weigl should continue to be one of the future leaders of the team. Virkus just confirmed again at the weekend that talks are underway with Benfica Lisbon to make the loan a permanent commitment from the summer. “We also have to build a new hierarchy. And we have the idea that Julian can be an important leader for Borussia,” said Virkus.

The agreed purchase option is 15 million euros – Benfica would have to make significant concessions to Borussia for a deal to be reached. Nevertheless, according to reports, the chances are good that an agreement is reached with Benfica. In any case, Weigl would like to stay in Gladbach, as the midfielder has emphasized several times.

Departure from Beyer has long been taken into account

It is unlikely that homegrown Jordan Beyer will also be part of Gladbach’s future. The defender has been loaned out to Burnley FC, and the English have the option to buy Beyer. For the first time, Virkus confirmed the purchase price that had been circulating for a long time at the general meeting. “There is a purchase option with a very high sum, 15 million euros,” said the sporting director.

Burnley is currently on a transfer ban. However, those responsible for the Premier League promoted hope for a repeal. The possible departure has long been taken into account because Beyer has hit the ground running at Burnley. “We’re proud that we were able to develop a player from the academy who might now help us transform the squad,” said Virkus.
