Vienna City Marathon: New contenders create excitement

Vienna City Marathon

A week and a half before the 40th Vienna City Marathon, the strong elite field has mixed up again. With Abdi Fufa (best time 2:05:57 hours) from Ethiopia and Kenyan Bethwel Yegon (2:06:14) there were two more contenders. Charles Ndiema and Senbere Teferi, among others, had to cancel their participation. Two top Austrian runners also drop out.

Timon Theuer, 2019 state champion over 10,000 meters road, considers starting a marathon too risky due to problems on the back of the thighs and the heel. Mario Bauernfeind had to sit out several times due to a gastrointestinal virus and a sinus infection. That’s why he wasn’t able to train enough in the pre-event phase and has to pass as well.

Andreas Vojta and Julia Mayer are ready for the start over the 42.195 km on April 23rd, with times of around 2:10 and under 2:30 hours respectively. Sondre Moen, on the other hand, will not be able to run close to his personal best of 2:05:48. According to the organizer, the Norwegian wants to make a solid comeback after a difficult phase and stay under 2:10.

39,000 registrations so far

Also not aiming for a personal best is the record holder of the Austrian Athletics Association (ÖLV), Eva Wutti, who wants to achieve a good result despite a preparation with interruptions in the context of the state championships that are being held at the same time. 230 athletes have announced themselves for the national title fights. Including all side competitions, 39,000 registrations were registered.
