UAQ STUDENT OBTAINS GOLD MEDAL IN SAMBO SPORT

Isaac Vázquez Yáñez, a student of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering (FI) of the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ), won the gold medal in the 2023 “Antonio Ramírez Rebollar” Master’s Cup, in the category Sambo Sport male under 98 kilograms; an example of passion for sport and pride for this House of Studies.

The university student explained that his training for this season started in the Grand Prize of Combat Sambo 2022 in Acapulco, where he won two medals: silver in Sambo Sport -men’s category in 98 kilograms or less- and bronze in the category Sambo Combat manly.

“We are waiting for the call for the state competition, continue to the national stage and be ready for the 2023 Pan American Games. If everything goes well, I will look for a pass to the 2023 Winter World Cup,” said the student.

Isaac Vázquez has also dabbled in judo by competing in the state phase based in the Parque 2000 Querétaro dome, in which he recently ranked first in the entity, in the men’s category of less than 90 kilograms. He pointed out that sambo and judo are disciplines that are similar, however, they change in the dynamics of the competitions.

“Sambo is a Russian discipline based on takedowns and a bit on ground fighting, it uses levers and strangulations; while judo is a discipline of Japanese origin based on projections and less on ground fighting, they are disciplines that complement each other and that is why this semester I joined judo to polish some aspects for the following competitions”, he indicated.

The young athlete considered that to combine both sports disciplines with his university life, passion and a lot of discipline are required.

“Being on representative teams requires resilience and determination to be an athlete and a student, it requires sacrifices to meet your expectations; but it is something that nourishes you in all aspects of your life. To be a good professional, you need to be passionate, disciplined and -above all- put dedication ”, she emphasized.

Currently, the Biomedical Engineering student is preparing for the following competitions, both in judo and sambo, and he clarified that the classifications are different in each discipline: for sambo, for each competition, scores are added; while in judo there are qualifying rounds.
