Toulouse outclasses Nantes and wins the Coupe de France

The TFC won (5-1) Saturday night in the final of the Coupe de France against Nantes. The Toulousains totally dominated the first half by scoring 4 goals in the first half hour and returning to the locker room with a very comfortable lead against Nantes who completely missed out on their meeting. This is the second Coupe de France in the history of Toulouse.

The game: 5-1

We often describe, rather rightly, the finals as padlocked matches, with too much at stake for them to result from a spectacular match. Yet Saturday night, it only took Toulouse four minutes to open the scoring, only ten to break and just over half an hour to kill the game.

The opener came from the surprising and young (22) Logan Costa in what was only his 11th game for the TFC since his arrival in 2021. The Cape Verdean opened the scoring with a header in the box, on corner, before doubling the bet a few moments later (10th, 2-0) on a copy-paste in the Nantes area.

The gap was made, of course, but the Canaries responded by putting their foot back on the ball in the next ten minutes and getting their first thrill, on a recovery from Mohamed deflected in extremis by Suazo. But this burst was short-lived, the same Suazo taking advantage of a counter-attack ball to send a fabulous pass (see elsewhere) in the direction of Dallinga who concluded in one touch (3-0, 21st). Ten minutes later, the Nantes residents showed that they were really overwhelmed defensively by letting Chaïbi strike from the corner of the surface and seeing Lafont repel the Algerian’s attempt… at the feet of Dallinga (4-0, 31st).

From there, the mass was said and the Nantes people never knew how to reverse the meeting despite a few good attempts (53rd, 57th, 66th). There was, as a consolation, the reduction of the score of Ludovic Blas on penalty (4-1, 75th), rewarding the efforts of Nantes. A start, a semblance of hope then caressed the spirits of Nantes. But even this was not allowed to them, Aboukhlal taking over without momentum and under the bar a badly repelled ball (5-1, 79th). Yet another symbol of the insolent success of Toulouse, five times scorers, a first in a Coupe de France final since 1970.

4

Like the number of goals scored at half-time by the Toulouse team, who folded the match in the first half hour of play. It was only the third time that a team had scored four goals at halftime. -time of a Coupe de France final. The last was in 1955, 68 years ago.

The gesture: Suazo’s wonder pass

In the 20th minute of the match, well launched but not yet victorious, the Toulousains logically chose to let the Nantes respond by ensuring defensively then playing the shots on the counter-attack. It was on one of these situations that the Chilean Gabriel Suazo delivered a formidable pass in depth for Thijs Dallinga. Neither too short to prevent the return of Castelletto, nor too long, not allowing Alban Lafont to get out at the feet of the Toulouse striker. The perfect pass.
