Top 14: Azéma will leave Toulon for family reasons and join Perpignan

In the harbor of Toulon, the Mignoni-Azéma duo only worked for one season. Franck Azéma will leave RC Toulon a year and a half after his arrival. The club formalized the news on Thursday confirming information from Midi-Olympic and of the team,

This Thursday morning, the coach who had won the Bouclier de Brennus 2009 in the Perpignan staff announced his departure to the Toulon players. At the time of his signing in 2021, he said: “I am very proud to join RC Toulon, an emblematic club of French and European rugby. The opportunity to direct one’s sporting future represents a great challenge to take up. I can’t wait to get back on the pitch and share my experience with the players and the staff, with the aim of obtaining positive results for the club very quickly. »

The RCT explains that Azéma is leaving “for personal reasons leading him to get closer to his family residing in the Pyrénées-Orientales”. In the press release, Azéma “clarified that in no case would his decision be linked to a possible problem with the club, Pierre Mignoni or the players”.

“The Rugby Club Toulonnais salutes the excellent work carried out by Franck since his arrival at the club, as well as the relevance, efficiency and perfect understanding of the duo he will form with Pierre Mignoni until the end of the current season, is it still written. The RCT confirms that an agreement has been reached so that, given the circumstances, Franck Azéma can accept the proposal to collaborate with USAP from the 2023/2024 season. »

As Midi-Olympique had indicated, he will replace Patrick Arlettaz in Perpignan. The latter had made it known in February that he was going to leave office. A former Perpignan player in the early 1990s, Azéma, 52, has known everything as a USAP technician, from hopefuls to professionals (2006-2010). With the culmination of a Bouclier de Brennus in 2009, then a final lost the following year with Jacques Brunel against Clermont. This weekend, the Toulonnais (4th) move on the lawn of Castres (11th) on behalf of the 23rd day of Top 14.
