On Sunday evening, Thijs Slegers said goodbye in the PSV stadium. The press secretary of the Eindhoven club recently died at the age of 46 from the consequences of leukemia.
PSV estimates that about 2,500 people in the Philips Stadium paid a final tribute to the Brabander. Slegers’ box was placed where the players normally enter the field. There people could say goodbye to the former journalist.
In addition, many flowers were placed near a fence with a picture of Slegers on it. A message could also be left in a condolence register. General Manager Marcel Brands, among others, was present at the occasion.
The stadium opened at 6:30 pm for the rally, which was closed around 9:00 pm by dozens of fans with red flares around the pitch. The funeral of Slegers, who already followed PSV as a journalist before his time as press secretary, will take place in a private circle on Monday.
Slegers was diagnosed with acute leukemia in October 2020 and announced in February of this year that he could no longer be cured. He then gained national fame with his appeal to become a stem cell donor. Thousands of people responded to that call.
In memory of Slegers, a minute’s silence was held in Nijmegen on Saturday before PSV’s away match against NEC. Before the European Championship qualifier of the Dutch national team against Gibraltar, there was also a minute of silence for Slegers last Monday.
