The worst numbers in fourteen years

Numbers and statistics don’t lie and in this case they reflect that Valencia Basket is experiencing its worst league season in the last 14 years. Álex Mumbrú’s men, after 28 Endesa League games played so far, have 14 wins and 14 losses, the same figures as in Matchday 28 of the 2008-2009 season. At that time, with Neven Spahija on the bench, Valencia Basket finished the regular phase of 32 days in seventh position. In that season there was even a change in the bench in the month of November: Spahija replaced the Greek Fotis Katsikaris.

To find a balance of wins and losses worse than the current one, you have to go back three more years in time. In the 2005/06 campaign, with Ricard Casas on the bench, Valencia BC concluded matchday 28 with 13 wins and 15 losses. And the regular League ended with a record of 16-18, ninth, out of the playoffs for the title. Since then, for 17 years to date, the team has always reached the ‘Playoff’ for the title. Also, most of the time, (ten), seeded in the top 4. Last season, with Peñarroya, the team entered the Playoff as third and on matchday 28 the balance was 18/10.

The record of victories in 28 games played is 25-3 in the 13/14 season; followed by 24-4 on 15/16 and 21-7 on 16/17 (in which Valencia Basket achieved its only league title). And, at the end of the regular season, the record is 30/4 from 13/14 and 28/6 from 15/16. The current one is also the worst season in the 7 campaigns in which, as in the current one, Valencia BC has combined the League and the Euroleague.

In the most immediate precedent, in the 20-21 season, they added 17 victories in Matchday 28 of the League, three more than in the current one. On that occasion, they finished the Regular League with 24 victories and the season, in fourth position.

In their first season in the Euroleague, on 3-2004-2004, Valencia Basket on matchday 28 had 20 wins and 8 losses and concluded the Regular League with 23 wins.

In the 2010-2011 season, the balance on matchday 28 was 19-9; in 2014-2015, it was 16-12; in 2017-2018, Valencia Basket had added 19 victories.
