Duisburg [ENA] The Ruhr Games will take place from Thursday, June 8th to Sunday, June 11th, 2023 for the fifth time in the Ruhr area. The event is one of the largest sports festivals for young people in Europe and can be visited free of charge and without registration.
On the grounds of the Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord, against an impressive backdrop of industrial culture, 5,200 young people from Germany and 30 other nations compete against each other in their sporting disciplines in three German championships and three European championships. Since it was founded in 2015, the Ruhr Games have been held every two years in Essen, Dortmund, Duisburg and Bochum. Around 110,000 visitors attended the last regular Ruhr Games in 2019. In 2021 there was a largely digital festival due to the corona pandemic.
Fusion of sport and culture
The cultural program includes digital art, street art and urban dance. During a performance, graffiti artist Steffen Mumm will create an oversized work of art as high as a five-story house. Two days later, the wall becomes the venue for the European Speed Climbing Championships. A highlight of the cultural program will be the opening show on June 8th, where the indie bands Giant Rooks and Leoniden will play.
Overall, the athletes compete in 19 sports in 325 international and high-class competitions for gold, silver and bronze. At the European Championships in the BMX discipline flatland and in bouldering as well as at the German Championships in beach volleyball, sports acrobatics and table tennis. other sports include: basketball, archery, boxing, handball, judo, athletics, swimming, speed climbing, pole vault, urban dance and water polo.
