The sixth green jacket of Spanish golf and 30th top ten in Augusta

Spanish golfers had within their reach this week at the 87th Masters to reach the thirty top 10 in the history of our golf since Ramón Sota, Seve Ballesteros’ uncle by blood, finished sixth in the 1965 edition. And thanks to Jon Rahm the sixth green jacket of Spanish golf and the top ten number 30.

Fifteen years passed from Sota until the unforgettable and ill-fated Seve put on his first green jacket, being the first European and second international (after Gary Player) to win in Augusta. In 1983 (Seve), 1994 (Txema Olazábal), 1999 (Olazábal) and 2017 (Sergio García) came the other four Spanish victories and the post shots by Seve himself in 1985 and 1987, and by Olazábal in 1991 also deserve to be highlighted. This Sunday Rahm did the sextet in a stellar plan. He is the only Spaniard who has Masters and US Open.

We must also highlight the participation of ours in the 2002 edition, with the triumph of Tiger Woods, and where up to three! members of the Navy were among the top ten in the ranking: Txema Olazábal, Sergio García and Miguel A. Jiménez.

In total there have been 15 Spaniards who have played the Masters at least once: in addition to the aforementioned Sota, Ballesteros, Olazábal, García and Jiménez, the brothers Ángel and Sebastián Miguel, Manuel Piñero, Antonio and Ignacio Garrido have stepped on the Augusta National , Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, Álvaro Quirós, Alex Larrazábal, Rafa Cabrera and Jon Rahm.

The list, in chronological order of appearance and with the year of his debut: Ángel Miguel (1959), Sebastián Miguel (1961), Ramón Sota (1964), Severiano Ballesteros (1977), Manuel Piñero (1978), Antonio Garrido (1978 ), Txema Olazábal (1985), Miguel Ángel Jiménez (1995), Ignacio Garrido (1998), Sergio García (1999), Alex Larrazábal (2003), Álvaro Quirós (2009), Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (2012), Rafa Cabrera (2016 ) and Jon Rahm (2017).
