Taty Castellanos, from Girona, the third striker to be wiped out by the barrage of insults in just seven days

GIRONAThe joy of Girona for the point added at the Camp Nou has been tainted by the feeling of guilt of Taty Castellanos, the white-and-red striker who in the second half missed a goal against Ter Stegen that who knows if he would have sent the three points towards Montilivi. The Argentinian ended the match crying, in the dressing room, with a feeling aggravated by the lack of mercy on social networks, which pointed to him as the main culprit of the tie.

In the morning, Castellanos has deleted his Twitter and Instagram profiles, and is already the third striker to flee the networks in just seven days, after Nico Williams, of Athletic Club, and Dusan Vlahovic, of Juventus. All three have the same reason for closing their public accounts: the barrage of insults for the missed opportunities. Criticisms that come, in the majority, from their own fans. This trend is spreading in a society that is increasingly used to making judgments on the internet, often protected by anonymity.

A beautiful assist from Arnau Martínez, at the start of the second half, left Castellanos completely alone to put Ter Stegen’s goal in a two-on-one, because he was also accompanied by Viktor Tsygankov. The Argentine, against all odds, got hold of the ball and did not give it to the Ukrainian, who only had to push it into an empty net. Castellanos, in fact, didn’t even shoot between the three posts: inexplicably, he shot wide.

“I was crying in the dressing room,” Míchel said at the end of the game. “For forwards it hurts more to miss a chance than all the work they could have done. He thinks he had the pass to Tsygankov, because it was a two-on-one with Ter Stegen. Taty has given us a lot this season and will continue to give us a lot . I am convinced of his level and that he will score goals, and what has happened… The strikers are there to fail, too. But in the end he will give us a lot of joy.” Castellanos has six goals in the League and one in the Copa del Rey.

Other cases of unbridled criticism of Montilivi

Following a question from ARA, Girona assures that Castellanos unsubscribed from the networks without reading any of the comments that quoted him. In other words, the Girona club considers that the insults have nothing to do with their decision. But in Girona there have already been different cases of footballers singled out and abused through social networks. One of the most famous was that of the former captain Àlex Granell, who was booed in the stadium and left Twitter in the first year in Segona after relegation. The player from Girona was very hurt by being criticized so harshly, something incomprehensible after all the successes he had experienced at the club. More recently, there was the barrage of criticism for fellow Argentinian striker Nahuel Bustos, who, like Castellanos at the Camp Nou, burst into tears, frustrated by his mistake.

Castellanos, minutes after the missed opportunity, was replaced by Cristhian Stuani, and at the end of the match, he could not hold back the tears in the dressing room. Hours later, still hot, he deleted his profiles on the networks to distance himself as much as possible from criticism and insults that cannot be justified in any way.
