Sixteen Tricolores in the main draws of Roland-Garros

The 2023 edition of Roland-Garros is well and truly launched. Six weeks before the start of the Paris tournament, the lists of qualifiers for the main draws were published on Tuesday. At least sixteen French people will take part in the French Open this year.

Among the women, they will be at least three in the big picture: Caroline Garcia (5th), Alizé Cornet (70th) and Océane Dodin (99th). For Diane Parry (109th), everything will depend on possible packages among members of the top 100.

On the men’s side, eleven Frenchmen qualified directly thanks to their ranking: Richard Gasquet (42nd), Benjamin Bonzi (44th, currently recovering), Adrian Mannarino (46th), Grégoire Barrère (57th), Constant Lestienne (60th) , Corentin Moutet (62), Quentin Halys (65th), Ugo Humbert (72nd), Arthur Rinderknech (80th), Luca Van Assche (87th) and Alexandre Muller (97th). Gaël Monfils (322nd) and Jérémy Chardy (637th) are registered via their protected classification (a system which allows players returning from injury to participate in several tournaments thanks to their old classification).

But these sixteen Blues will not be the only ones to tread the clay at Porte d’Auteuil. Whether through qualifying or via an invitation offered by the Federation, other members of the France team will soon be added.

The lists of entrants for the qualifications are not yet published. It will be the ranking of Monday, May 15 that will prevail. For the moment, ten women and ten men are in time to appear, not to mention the many guests. The beneficiaries of the sixteen “wild-cards” for the two main draws have not been revealed either, but certain data are already known.

Arthur Fils should discover the main draw

For the second consecutive year, the FFT has set up the “Destination Roland-Garros” operation, which awards wild cards based on merit to athletes who have achieved good results since the start of the season. There are two ways to be part of the winners: via a ranking based on the results of major national tournaments or via the world ranking calculated since January 1st.

In this little game, Clara Burel (111th) should avoid qualifying and go straight into the big picture, just like Jessika Ponchet (124th). Among the men, Arthur Fils (122nd) and Laurent Lokoli (171st) are the best placed. The FFT will choose only eight of the twelve remaining invitations since, following an agreement with the American and Australian Federations, two nationals of these countries will benefit from a precious sesame.
