Sensation! Austrian Weissborn in the Monte Carlo final

Sam Weissborn causes a huge sensation at the ATP 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo!

The 31-year-old Viennese – normally on the Challenger Tour – is surprisingly in the final with his Monegasque partner Romain Arneodo.

The duo, only thanks to a wild card in the main competition, also prevailed against the two Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz with 7: 6 (7), 4: 6, 10: 7 in the match tiebreak on Saturday morning. Krawietz/Puetz occupy places 16 and 28 in the double ranking. For comparison: Arneodo is number 89 in the world, Weissborn as 105. Even outside the top 100.

The duo had already surprised in the preliminary rounds with victories over Marcelo Melo/Alexander Zverev (BRA/GER) and second-seeded Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury (USA/GBR).

Weissborn pulverisiert Career High

The Viennese will pulverize his previous career high in doubles – 77th place – by reaching the final in the principality. Weissborn will definitely climb up to position 61 on Monday. If he won the tournament, he would even just make it into the top 50 and draw closer to Austria’s flagship doubles duo Alexander Erler (ATP 39) and Lucas Miedler (ATP 40).

The Austrian-Monegasque pairing will share prize money of EUR 152,140 just for reaching the final, while the doubles winners will receive EUR 282,870.

Weissborn/Arneodo’s opponents in the final have not yet been determined: they will either face Fabrice Martin/Andreas Mies (FRA/GER) or Ivan Dodig/Austin Krajicek (CRO/USA).
