Jannik Sinner made it to the semifinals at the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo. The Sesto gave Lorenzo Musetti no chance at all on Friday afternoon.

Many fans in the Principality had prepared for a longer tennis day. At the end of the day, the duel between their two super talents Jannik Sinner (ATP 8) and Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 21) was on the program for the many spectators from Italy. But Sinner had no problems at all with the Djokovic conqueror and impressively showed who is currently the best tennis player in the boot state. After just 1:16 hours of play, the South Tyrolean defeated the man from Carrara (Tuscany) 6:2 and 6:2. This is the third time this year that Sinner has reached the semi-finals of a Masters tournament.

Sinner not only allowed Musetti to develop from the start and acted uncompromisingly. In contrast to the match against Djokovic, the clay court was dry this time. When the sun is shining, the felt ball just jumps up faster. That didn’t exactly play into Musetti’s cards – just like Sinner’s way of playing. The 21-year-old from Pusterer had an answer to almost every question asked by his colleague of the same age (Sinner is only a few months older). Right at the beginning, Sinner Musetti took the serve twice and won the first set 6:2.

At the beginning of the second half, Musetti seemed to get into the game better. But Sinner made the big points. When he then took a 2-1 lead through a break, the thing was as good as over. Musetti was rarely able to use his strengths. Sinner’s aggressiveness also led him to a clear 6:2 in the second round. Incidentally, this was Sinner’s 150th victory on the ATP tour and the seventh success in the seventh duel with an Italian.

Semi-final against Rune

In his first Monte Carlo semi-final, Sinner now meets Holger Rune (ATP 9). The 19-year-old Dane cleared Daniil Medvedev 6: 3 and 6: 4 on Friday. The match will take place on Saturday from 3.30 p.m. In the other semi-final, Andrey Rublev (ATP 6) and Taylor Fritz (ATP 10) meet beforehand.

Sinner has played against Rune once – last October in the semi-finals in Sofia. At that time, the South Tyrolean had to give up in the third set shortly before the defeat due to injury. Rune then won his biggest title in November 2022 when, as an unseeded player, he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of the Paris Masters tournament. Back then on hard court. But the Dane is also very strong on sand.
