Rublev wins his first Masters 1,000 in Monte Carlo

MADRID, 16 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev has won the first ATP Masters 1,000 of his career by beating the Danish Holger Rune (5-7, 6-2, 7-5) in the final of the Monte Carlo (Monaco) tournament, confirming his greatest success in the ATP circuit.

Rublev, current number six in the world, was forced to overcome their duel on the clay of the Principality after his opponent, ninth in the ATP ranking, prevailed in the first round after breaking his serve in the last game -after already a couple of breaks were exchanged previously-.

He started the second set 2-0 and, although Rune broke him back in the fourth game, he won the last four to even the contest. It was in the third set that he went through his most critical moment, with the Dane leading 4-1; however, two breaks allowed him to regain the initiative and end the contest after two hours and 36 minutes of play.

In this way, Rublev, 25, already has titles on clay in the ATP 250 (Belgrade), ATP 500 (Hamburg) and ATP Masters 1,000 (Monte Carlo) categories. The next level on the surface will be Roland Garros, the ‘Grand Slam’ where he has signed the quarterfinals in the 2020 and 2022 editions.
