Roland-Garros: Thirteen French players including Gaël Monfils and three French women directly qualified

Just over a month from its launch, the Roland-Garros draw is beginning to take shape. On Tuesday, the list of “direct entrants” for ladies’ and gentlemen’s singles was published by the French Tennis Federation (FFT) and we therefore know the majority of the Blues who will compete in the 2023 edition (May 28-June 11 next). Among the men, there will be 13 including Gaël Monfils and Jérémy Chardy who benefit from a protected ranking because they have been injured for a long time. On the side of these ladies, they are three to be sure of being in the running: Caroline Garcia, Alizé Cornet and Océane Dodin (99th in the world and last to pass the cut).

In addition to Monfils and Chardy, the 11 French Top 100 will be there: Richard Gasquet, Benjamin Bonzi, Adrian Mannarino, Grégoire Barrère, Constant Lestienne, Corentin Moutet, Quentin Halys, Ugo Humbert, Arthur Rinderknech, Luca Van Assche and Alexandre Müller . Crowned among the juniors in 2021, Van Assche will play the big picture of the main tournament for the first time, which will also be the case for Constant Lestienne.

Wild cards needed for Thiem and Fognini?

Unless injured, these 16 Blues will therefore be in the running on Parisian clay in the 1st round, but they should be more numerous because some will be able to count on invitations (wildcards), while others can hope to come out of the qualifications. It should be noted that in the current state of things, unless there are several withdrawals before the fortnight – which often happens due to injuries -, Dominic Thiem and Fabio Fognini, respectively 3rd and 5th on the “waiting list” will have need wildcards (or go through the qualifiers) to play this 2023 edition of Roland-Garros.
