President Maduro inaugurated V ALBA Sports Games from the Jorge Luis García Carneiro Stadium

Caracas. – From the Jorge Luis García Carneiro Stadium, located in the state of La Guaira, this Friday the curtain was opened for the V Sports Games of ALBA 2023, whose inauguration was accompanied by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro.

“With these V Sports Games, ALBA (Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty) shows that it is youth, hope and the future of our peoples”, he emphasized by extending his good wishes to athletes from the 11 participating countries.

At the end of the traditional parade of sports delegations, the Head of State stressed that ALBA-TCP “is a spiritual union, a sports union.” In this sense, he stressed that the Sports Games constitute a platform for the development of youth in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“I hope that these days of sports participation, of competition, are very profitable for all of you. On behalf of all the youth and the people of Venezuela, we wish them the best of success and the best of luck in their competitions”, he pointed out.

In its capacity as host country, Venezuela will host -until Saturday April 29- representatives of Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Cuba, Nicaragua and; St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Also, the delegation of the Russian Federation will participate as a guest country.

On this occasion, the ALBA Sports Games will have the presence of 3,539 athletes, who will compete for medals in 33 disciplines: chess, athletics, baseball, bowling, BMX freestyle cycling, bocce, mountain biking, track cycling, fencing, dominoes, bodybuilding and futsal.

They also include trampoline gymnastics, karate, judo, weight lifting, wrestling, swimming, softball, table tennis, silver volleyball, court volleyball, basketball, billiards, boxing, road cycling, soccer, rhythmic gymnastics, kickboxing, kenpo, skating, taekwondo and wushu.

The 2023 edition marks the resumption of the multi-sport event, after 12 years without being held. Precisely, the last time the ALBA Sports Games would be held would be in Venezuela. In 2011, Barquisimeto, capital of Lara state, would see Cuba at the top of the medal table with 302 medals (172 gold, 75 silver and 65 bronze).

The ALBA Games arise from the creation of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), which occurred in 2004 at the initiative of the leaders of Cuba, Fidel Castro Ruz, and from Venezuela, Hugo Chavez.

Its fundamental purpose is to strengthen the bonds of solidarity between the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean through sports.

The activity was accompanied by the head of state, the first combatant and deputy of the National Assembly, Cilia Flores; the Executive Secretary of ALBA-TCP, Félix Plasencia; the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez; the Minister of People’s Power for Youth and Sports, Mervin Maldonado; as well as the governors of Miranda state, Héctor Rodríguez; and from La Guaira, José Terán; and the mayoress of the Libertador municipality, Carmen Meléndez.
