Originally from Lima, ‘Juanpi’ as his family and friends call him, began in the world of sports at the age of 5 when he became a fan of what ended up becoming his passion.

Juan Pablo learned about tennis at the club where he attended with his father Pablo, a mechanical engineer; his mother, Milagros, an accountant; and his two brothers.

When did you start in professional tennis?

Juan Pablo Varillas, 27, began in 2013 in the professional field of tennis at the age of 17.

An indelible memory for the Peruvian was when he participated for the first time in a previous phase of a Gran Slamand would achieve what Rafael Nadal told him in 2013 in an exhibition match in Lima: “Hopefully we’ll see each other on tour at some point”.

In 2020, Juan Pablo plays his first qualifying phase of the Grand Slam, and after that, a Davis cupwhere he would beat Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland and confirms its classification to the World Group.

In 2022, he played the previous one at Roland Garros and won, managing to qualify for the main draw. He was the first Peruvian to participate in the main draw of a Grand Slam and Roland Garros since 2008.
