Novak Djokovic had to say goodbye to Monte-Carlo early

The big goal for Novak Djokovic, which he made no big secret of before the start of the clay court season, is the French Open in Paris again this year. And so it was not particularly surprising that the world number one at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo was not yet at the top of his game.

In the three-set defeat against Lorenzo Musetti, Djokovic probably showed his weakest performance of the season so far. “I feel awful after playing like this, to be honest,” said the 35-year-old. After the match, he did not want to reveal what part possible elbow problems played.

However, Djokovic should not be too worried about the defeat in the principality. Since winning the tournament in 2015, the 22-time Grand Slam winner in Monte Carlo has never progressed past the quarterfinals. “I don’t think it’s a catastrophe,” said Djokovic after the match, which is probably one of the reasons why.

The ATP 250 tournament in Banja Luka is on the program for Djokovic this week. There he could meet Stan Wawrinka in the second round.
