National Order of Japan for Salima Souakri

ALGIERS – Former Algerian judo champion Salima Suakri has received the Order of the Rising Sun alongside Japan’s National Rosette Medal, becoming the first Algerian woman to receive an award from the Japanese government, the Japanese Embassy in Algiers.

The Japanese Embassy said in a statement: “This prize is awarded to Salima Suakri, who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of judo in Algeria and mutual understanding between Japan and Algeria.” The award ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 27 at 6 p.m. in a Japanese house in Ben Aknoun, Algiers.

Rewarded, including eight African champion titles, three gold medals at the African Games, gold pendants at the Mediterranean Games and participation in four Olympic Games (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004) After a sports career, Salimas Suakri, 48, is a former elite sports minister and judo coach, as well as the winner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) women’s and sports trophies. Suakri is also the first African judoka to win a gold medal at a Grand Slam in Paris.
