Malcolm Brogdon wins NBA Sixth Man of the Year award

During the first few games of the playoffs, the NBA traditionally announces individual awards for the best players of the regular season. In the Italian night the league awarded the prize of Sixth Man of the Year to Malcolm Brogdon, who was among the favorites to win. The Boston Celtics guard had a terrific season off the bench, traveling to 15 points, four rebounds and 3.7 assists average. Brogdon received 60 win votes out of 100 voters for regular season awards, racking up 408 total points. Second was Immanuel Quickley, a Knicks guard who received 34 first-place votes and 326 total points, while Bobby Portis rounded out the podium.

In the 67 games he played in the green and white shirt, Malcolm Brogdon never started. A role, that of sixth man, to which he had to get used to after in previous years he had always played as a starter, first with Milwaukee and then with the Indiana Pacers. In an interview with Inside The NBAprogram of the TNT network, the Celtics guard received the award and immediately wanted to thank his teammates and coaches:

“I feel really honoured. It was a big change for me, coming from Indiana to Boston, but this is a great team. I have great teammates and a great coaching staff. Joe [Mazzulla] he had to take over the team and did a great job, so I want to thank all the guys.”

The Celtics had taken Brogdon in the offseason, trading Indiana a pack of players and two first-round draft picks. After the Finals loss against the Warriors, the green-and-whites needed to further improve the roster, and the capture of the player originally from Atlanta proved to be decisive. Malcolm Brogdon concluded the interview by talking about how, over the course of his career, he has adapted to playing alongside big NBA stars:

“I had the pleasure of playing with Giannis, one of the best players in the world. Me, coming out of college an All-American and with a string of honors, I had to get my ego in check, especially when I was in Milwaukee. When I went to Indiana me and Domantas [Sabonis] we were the stars, but the last couple of years have not been so good. So I had to realize that maybe I can’t be number one in a team, but I can be number two, three or four. And playing in Boston behind Tatum, Brown and the other guys, established All-Stars and All-NBA level, was a great fit for me ”
