With the 6: 4, 7: 5 success, the man from Kempen used his unexpected chance ideally and collected valuable world ranking points in the Spanish capital.

Altmaier had failed in qualifying and then moved into the main draw as a so-called “lucky loser” for Pablo Carreno Busta. He took over the Spaniard’s first-round bye and put on a highly concentrated performance against Otte.

In the third round, a duel with Yannick Hanfmann from Karlsruhe awaits the former round of 16: He had played his way into the main draw as a qualifier and surprised Lorenzo Musetti, who was 15th, with 6: 4, 7: 6 (3).
