Krejčíková gave Russia a canary in Stuttgart. Leheček’s match in Bosnia was postponed by rain

Tennis player Barbora Krejčíková outclassed Russia’s Ludmila Samsonova 6:2, 6:0 in the first round of the clay tournament in Stuttgart. In the next round, for the fourth time this year, she will face Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenkova from Belarus, who initially had time off. Jiří Lehečka’s duel in Banja Luka was postponed due to rain.

World number 12 Krejčíková, who last week won a point against Ukraine to help the Czech team advance to the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup, beat Samsonová, ranked three places worse, in 83 minutes. In the match, she averted all seven break points, took the opponent’s errant serve five times and won the last eight games. Three years younger, she defeated Russia for the second time this year after the tournament in Abu Dhabi.

In the fight for the quarterfinals, Krejčíková’s opponent will be world number two Sabalenková, with whom she will meet again after three weeks and for the fourth time in two months. At the February tournament in Dubai, the Czech tennis player defeated the Belarusian favorite on her way to the title, in March in Indian Wells and Miami, Sabalenková was more successful. The 24-year-old native of Minsk has a 4:1 lead overall in the head-to-head record.

Today at the clay tournament in Banja Luka, Lehečka missed his first round match against the Frenchman Gaël Monfils. Due to the rain, the day’s program was ended early, and the unplayed matches, including Leheček’s duel, were postponed to Wednesday.

The best Czech tennis player Lehečka is ranked sixth in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 21-year-old native of Mladá Boleslav will meet Monfils, the former world number 6, who is currently ranked 322nd and is starting the tournament thanks to a free card, for the first time in his career.
