Kobel instead of Upamecano: That’s why the DFL evaluates the 1-0 as an own goal | table football

There was no shortage of curious scenes in FC Bayern’s 4-2 win over Borussia Dortmund. The kicker explains.

The mishap of the top game: Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel misses the ball.

IMAGO/MIS

It doesn’t get much crazier: In the twelfth minute, Borussia Dortmund was even a little better in the game than FC Bayern up to that point, defender Dayot Upamecano hit a long ball from his own half past friend and foe. A pass into nirvana, but then the unbelievable happened: BVB keeper Gregor Kobel missed the ball, which tumbled into the goal behind him, to the astonishment of everyone in the Allianz Arena.

Happy accompanied by Leroy Sanè, who was not offside and who no longer intervened. dismay on both sides. Here out of dismay, there out of joy. Joshua Kimmich called the goal “pure luck”, Thomas Müller spoke of a liberation and a chest release. And Upamecano? Wanted to revisit the scene on Saturday night and hoped the goal would be credited to him.

Upamecano hopes in vain – ice hockey as an example?

However, nothing will come of it, the DFL evaluates the 1-0 as an own goal by Gregor Kobel. First, because Upamecano’s shot had no intention of scoring. But that alone is not enough and would at least be worth discussing, because a slipped cross, for example, is ultimately credited to the crosser if nobody else was on the ball.

This is exactly the second decisive factor: Kobel touched the ball in his completely unsuccessful action, hence an own goal. The rule from ice hockey would be just as good as recommended for football: The goal is simply credited to the player who was last on the puck, there are no own goals.

Bayern’s penalty series

Almost as strange, albeit irrelevant to the outcome of the game: FC Bayern conceded a penalty again, in the third game in a row, four in total. This mishap in three consecutive games has never happened to Munich in their Bundesliga history.

FC Bayern games with penalties

However, four penalties in such a short time is not a first: In 1972/73 Bayern even “made” four in two games, three of them on matchday 21 against Hertha BSC and one on matchday 22 against Wuppertal. All four penalties in 2023 were converted by the opponent, all of which were caused by different players: Matthijs de Ligt against Augsburg, Benjamin Pavard and Upamecano against Leverkusen, Serge Gnabry against BVB.

At least Upamecano is immune to this in the next game in Freiburg, he will miss next Saturday because of his fifth yellow card.
