Kimmich reacts shocked to bankruptcy

The final phase of the defeat at Manchester City was the maximum penalty for the Bayern bosses. Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn watched the final minutes of the game with a petrified expression. The FCB players around Joshua Kimmich were also shocked after the game.

The faces of club boss Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said it all. Pale, disappointed and staring, the FC Bayern management duo watched the closing stages of the first leg of the quarter-finals at Manchester City. In the end it was 0:3. The chances of progressing in the second Champions League clash with England’s champions on April 19 are slim at best. After the end of the DFB Cup against SC Freiburg, the second title seems almost gone after the fourth game under new coach Thomas Tuchel. The bosses had separated from his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann because they saw the goals of the season as “endangered”.

One cannot necessarily speak of a dangerous situation. The situation is trickier. Sure, Bayern showed an actually appealing performance on Tuesday evening up to 0: 2 after a major drop-out by Dayot Upamecano. But at the end of the game, the game slipped completely away from Munich. “There were also chances for the 4-0 or 5-0,” said defender Matthijs de Ligt Amazon Prime: “It was unnecessary that we gave the game away like that. It’s a shame, I can’t say shit – that’s the feeling.” A fantastic long-range shot by Rodri initiated the hosts’ victory (27′), Bernardo Silva (70′) benefited from Upamecano’s mistake and Erling Haaland scored – almost as a matter of course – his goal (76′).

Bayern star Kimmich: “Brutal and bitter”

Joshua Kimmich, marked by the duels with the Norwegian and with a black eye on the microphone, seemed shocked at the clarity of the defeat. “Brutal,” said the international in a monosyllable and monotonous voice: “After the 2-0 defeat, we became a little more prone to making mistakes and allowed a few chances. Before that, it was an even game. The result is bitter.”

The midfield driver did not want to write off the semifinals completely. “We have seen that it is possible to keep up. And – even if it sounds strange after a 0: 3 – that it is possible to win,” said Kimmich: “I have the self-confidence and trust in the team that we can get something in the second leg.”
