Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny (32) has been substituted with heart problems during the first half of the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Sporting CP.
Szeczesny complained of heart problems just before half-time when the score was 0-0. His teammates Manuel Locatelli and Arkadiusz Milik tried to calm the visibly upset keeper. In tears, the Polish international was finally substituted in the 44th minute, with Mattia Perin replacing him.
Szeczesny was immediately examined in detail at the stadium. An increased heart rate and shortness of breath were noted, while an ECG did not bring any negative results. “After an initial check, Tek is fine,” Juventus wrote in a first statement on Twitter.
Szeczesny himself stated: “I was worried because I couldn’t breathe, but I’m fine now. Tests have confirmed that there is no problem.”
Opponent Sporting promptly responded to the scene with an encouraging tweet. On Friday, Szczesny is to be examined again thoroughly in order to find the cause of his problems on Thursday evening.
