…means gentle way (also translated with the literal meaning of English: gentle = gentle, noble, noble) and is a Japanese martial art whose motto is “victory by yielding”. The founder is Professor Dr. Jigoro Kano. Precursor forms of judo/jiu-jitsu were adapted for competition in the early 20th century. All dangerous techniques were removed in order to turn an art, which had previously been primarily used for self-defense, into a holistic teaching for body and mind. The remaining techniques are mainly throws, holding and choking techniques and arm locks.

Judo is not only a way of physical training, but also a philosophy for personality development. Judo is essentially based on two basic philosophical principles:
Helping and understanding each other for mutual progress and well-being (jita-kyoei).
The best possible use of body and mind (sei-ryoku-zenyo).
The aim is to carry these principles as an attitude and to consciously express them in every movement on the judo mat (tatami). A judo master never stops practicing judo, even if he is not in the dojo (training hall). (Source: wikipedia)
