Interview with Felix Brych: Over two decades in professional football

Im sterninterview, the renowned referee looks back on 20 years in top-flight football. He also talks about his worst mistake – recognizing the so-called phantom goal in 2013, which made Bundesliga history.

Brych, 47, is considered one of the best referees in German professional football. The doctor of law has so far managed more than 500 first and second division games. Brych was also active internationally: between 2007 and 2021 he officiated at two World Cups and officiated 69 Champions League games. In 2017 he was named “World Referee” by Fifa.

Mr. Brych, strikers are happy about goals scored, defenders about tackles at the right moment and coaches about match plans that lead to success. What makes a referee happy?
