Last night was the end of the season in Overlade Badminton Club, and the end was somewhat more festive than usual. There were several things to celebrate in the club. Partly the club can celebrate its 35th anniversary this year, and partly the club’s oldest member turned 90 on Sunday.

The birth attendant is former teacher Holger Larsen, who is still an active player at the club, where he faithfully shows up every Thursday during the season. From now on, he will not have to pay the modest club dues of DKK 300, as he was appointed by the board as an honorary member. On that occasion, the club’s chairman Svend Støttrup gave a speech for the birthday boy, whom he called a role model for all the members. With the honorary membership came a diploma and a bottle of Dr. Nielsen’s Bitter.

– I know, I am an important member of the club, because then all of you also have the opportunity to win a match, said Holger Larsen with a well-placed twinkle in his eye.

He himself does not remember exactly how long he has been playing badminton. But he also practiced the game with racket and badminton before the establishment of the Overlade Badminton Club in 1988. Before that time, he played more unorganized in the gymnasium at Overlade School with colleagues.

The end of the season was marked with badminton, where all players were mixed across the usual teams. Afterwards, smørrebrød, beer and wine were served to all the members at the club’s expense.

It was a pleasant evening, which many would like to see repeated every year. However, 5 years pass before the next – current – member turns 90.

Overlade Badminton Club has just under 25 members, and the season starts from now until September.
