The Dutch handball players took a big step towards next year’s European Championship on Wednesday. The team of national coach Staffan Olsson was 23-28 too strong for Belgium and is almost assured of the final tournament in Germany.
The Orange started excellently in Hasselt, Belgium, and was already leading 10-17 halfway through. In the second half, Belgium came back a bit, but the victory was not in danger. Top scorer on the Dutch side was Rutger ten Velde with ten hits.
Because of the victory, the Orange is almost assured of participation in the European Championship. The first two countries in the group qualify directly, but the four best numbers three of the eight groups also qualify. It looks like the Netherlands is certainly among them.
Number two Netherlands will close the qualifying series against number three Greece in Almere on Sunday. A draw is enough for Olsson’s team to secure a European Championship ticket.
The Dutch handball men have been on the rise in recent years. In January, the team was active at the World Cup for the first time in 62 years. The Orange then finished fourteenth.
