Gael Monfils failed to start at the clay court Masters event in Monte Carlo

Hard weeks and months for the French crowd favorite Gael Monfils: After the Parisian, who has now fallen to 324th place in the world rankings, suffered a wrist injury in his third match this year in Miami against his compatriot Ugo Humbert, despite all attempts – it is not possible for the 36-year-old to start at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo.

Monfils couldn’t really make an appearance last season either – Elina Svitolina’s husband was struggling too much with persistent knee and foot problems. However, the current complications on the wrist should not be lengthy – an inflammation with slight neurological effects can be managed in a reasonable amount of time using infiltration and ultrasound, according to the Western European in a recent vlog.

A wild card in Monte Carlo free again

Nevertheless – the clay court classic in the Principality of Monaco obviously comes too early for “Lamonf”. The next opportunity for a successful comeback on the ATP tour could now be for the former world number six at the “new” ATP tour event in Banja Luka. There have been repeated rumors on Twitter over the past few days and weeks that a wildcard at the 250cc event in Bosnia-Herzegovina could go to the western European.

Banja Luka will be on the ATP tour calendar for the first time in 2023 – the license for the Serbia Open in Belgrade went to the neighboring country to the west. Due to Monfils’ cancellation at the Monte Carlo Country Club, Brit Jack Draper has moved up into the main draw – a wild card for the southern European clay court classic has now become free again.
