Five NFL players suspended for violating betting policy

Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill of the Lions received six-game suspensions. Their teammates Quintez Cephus and CJ Moore are ruled out for an indefinite periodso at least a year.

The Lions announced they released Cephus and Moore on Friday. Team general manager Brad Holmes said the players have demonstrated reasoning that is inconsistent with our team’s values and violates league rules. Holmes said his organization would work with Williams and Berryhill to ensure such an incident does not happen again.

Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders is also implicated.

The penalties will come into effect just before the start of the season. Players will still be able to take part in team activities during the summer.

The members of each team must respect a policy governing the bets, which prohibits in particular to take part in games of chance in establishments belonging to the league or to the team, which includes the places of training.

The NFL says an investigation found the policy violations did not compromise the integrity of the sport or a game in any way.
