After FC Bayern left the Champions League, coach Thomas Tuchel harshly criticized referee Turpin. He had sent him out of the field. From Tuchel’s point of view, however, his decisions weighed more heavily – with lamentable consequences for his team.

Thomas Tuchel trudged disappointed from the stands after the next Bayern knockout. The French referee Clément Turpin had shown the Munich coach a yellow-red card in the 86th minute because of constant excitement, so Tuchel had to spend the rest of the game in the spectators’ seats. When he was allowed back on the pitch after the final whistle, he congratulated his great opponent Pep Guardiola. Meanwhile, his bruised players had to be rebuilt in front of the fan curve with master chants.

“If you look at both games, it wasn’t about will. We didn’t play well for 30, 35 minutes. We weren’t the worse team, but we’re going out clearly. It was realistic to score three goals. But then you have to take chances,” said Bayern Munich captain Joshua Kimmich.

FC Bayern, which had been desperate for a long time, clearly missed the miracle of Munich without the necessary goal punch. The dreamed-of Champions League comeback against Manchester City failed on Wednesday evening despite all attempts at 1-1 (0-0). In the first leg, last week’s 3-0 loss, the Munich team tried in vain in Manchester and suffered defeat due to serious deficiencies on the defensive.

After the recent exit, the third in a row in the quarter-finals of the competition, Tuchel was hard to tame when it came to referees. He criticized the 40-year-old harshly. “Six marks from the first minute, from the first decision,” he complained to DAZN and complained that every small decision against FC Bayern had failed. In addition, goalkeeping coach Tapalovic and substitute keeper Ulreich were only warned at Bayern Bank.

“Giving a penalty is a joke”

There was a lot that had potential for excitement, but the excerpt from the first half of the game didn’t necessarily flatter the referee.

18. Minute: Upamecano is the last man to trip Haaland, referee Turpin immediately pulls out red. Angry protest on the Bayern bench – then the all-clear. Haaland was offside, Turpin took back the sending off. Coach Tuchel gives the referee scornful applause.

29. Minute: The next trouble. Rodri bumped 28 meters in front of the Musiala goal – but no free kick. Musiala no longer understands the world.

35. Minute: Upamecano accidentally touched a De Bruyne shot with his arm outstretched in the penalty area. penalty. Lucky for Bayern: Haaland shoots over it. At BILD, Thorsten Kinhöfer, former top referee and referee expert, judges: “He turns away, not an intentional handball. Giving a 911 is a joke. Internationally, however, it is whistled. Such an interpretation of the rules by Uefa is simply anti-football.”

Bayern created good opportunities – but overall the Munich team posed far too little danger for the miracle. After the deficit due to a hit by Haaland (57th), the air was finally out. Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich’s penalty goal after a handball from Manchester’s Manuel Akanji – also a questionable decision – came much too late.

But Tuchel also attributed part of the disaster to Turpin. “We had them hooked again, even more so than in Manchester. We didn’t get any reinforcements in 180 minutes, as encouragement to really turn it around and we didn’t get any luck in the game either. That’s why I’m very satisfied with how we performed and played,” he said, but qualified: “Two couldn’t keep up the level: the pitch and the referee.”

Tuchel complained that his team had started the game 3-0, “we definitely need the small decisions. If you don’t get the referee’s decisions all the time, for example after the tactical foul on Jamal Musaila 17 meters from goal (29th minute, editor’s note), then it adds up. Of course we need a free-kick, of course we need a deflected free-kick into the top corner if we want to score three goals.”

Of course, the whole tirade could not cover up the fact that, despite a decent performance, things are not going well with Bayern. Defensively they are sometimes too easy to overcome, Upamecano in particular is a major uncertainty factor in defence. And offensively they lack the penetrating power, conviction and courage to seriously embarrass a team like Manchester City, especially over long stretches.

The Causa Turpin was therefore probably only an unfavorable factor that sealed the end. In the end, it got a little emptier on the Bayern bench: Shortly after Tuchel was sent off, his assistant coach Zsolt Löw saw the referee red (87th) and was expelled from the interior.

FC Bayern will continue on Saturday (3.30 p.m., in the WELT sports ticker) in Mainz, while opponents Manchester City can waste a thought on the semi-finals at Real Madrid.
