Evenepoel teammates seem ready for the Giro, although one big issue remains

Less than 10 days before the start of the Giro on May 6. Still, Soudal-Quick Step will wait until a few days before the start of the Giro to announce the Evenepoel teammates.

Ilan Van Wilder, Louis Vervaeke, Pieter Serry and Jan Hirt are already certain of their selection in the Giro. The first three therefore performed well in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and are confidently heading to Italy.

“I think I’m better today than last year before the start of the Vuelta,” says Van Wilder HLN. Last year Van Wilder had a lot of bad luck with a heavy fall in Liège and illness in the summer. But then drove a strong Vuelta. So that promises for the Giro.

Louis Vervaeke also proved in Liège that he has top form. “I am also better than before the Vuelta.” Vervaeke was also ill in the summer and had to move a month and a half before the Vuelta. Not ideal.

Still waiting for final selection

Yet it is not yet clear who the other three names will be employed by Evenepoel. While Jumbo-Visma announced its selection on April 7. “We have more than eight good candidates for the Giro,” says sports director Klaas Lodewyck.

In the past, many riders preferred to ride the Tour. “But if you can ride the Giro to win with Remco, that changes things: that is of course very attractive,” says Lodewyck. The final selection will follow within a few days.
