End of soap opera: Lamar Jackson renews contract with the Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens reached an agreement to renew the player’s contract after a saga that lasted for more than a year. The quarterback, who received the non-exclusive franchise tag and had requested a trade, was selected in the first round of the 2018 Draft and was unanimously named MVP of the season in 2019.

• Jackson, who does not have an agent, individually negotiated the contract with the franchise. He played the first five years on the rookie contract and remained a member of the Ravens due to the application of the non-exclusive franchise tag.
• Lamar Jackson’s contract surpassed Jalen Hurts’ deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, making him the highest paid player in NFL history by annual average.
• Negotiations dragged on for months due to the lack of agreement on the amount of guaranteed money. The quarterback even asked for a trade to another franchise for the lack of progress during the discussions.
• With the contractual extension, Lamar’s cap hit for the 2023 season is expected to decline considerably, allowing for the addition of one more wide receiver via trade.

With the contract extension just before the Draft and the cap hit trend this season decreasing, the possibility that the Baltimore Ravens will add another veteran option to the wide receiver corps is growing. The team recently signed Odell Beckham Jr. in free agency — and the receiver immediately posted an Instagram story with Jackson — and, according to multiple rumors, are interested in a possible trade for DeAndre Hopkins, currently of the Arizona Cardinals.

Baltimore fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief on Draft day. Lamar isn’t going anywhere.
