Djokovic again number one in the world rankings – Thiem falls back

The current tennis world rankings were published on Monday. There is a change at the top. Novak Djokovic is number one in the world again, replacing Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard is “only” second in the world rankings. Alcaraz had to admit defeat to Italian Jannik Sinner in the semifinals in Miami. The “Djoker”, who takes back the lead, is now benefiting from this.

The Serbian tennis star was absent from Indian Wells and Miami. The reason for this is the strict entry regulations in the USA. Djokovic is still not vaccinated against the corona virus and was therefore not allowed to enter the country. So he got the world number one position without a fight. The Norwegian Casper Ruud is now fourth, Andrej Rublev overtook Felix Auger-Aliassime and is now sixth. Jannik Sinner worked his way up and is in ninth place in the world rankings, just behind Holger Rune. Taylor Fritz completes the top ten.

On the other hand, there is bad news for Dominic Thiem. The Austrian had a weak start to the season and is currently only 111th in the world rankings. Dominic Thiem starts in Estoril on Tuesday. This week’s ATP tournament brings a three-way battle for Austria’s number one in the tennis world rankings. Dominic Thiem and Sebastian Ofner will probably play against each other on Tuesday. It is the third meeting of the two on the tour and on sand, in Kitzbühel 2019 and 2022 Thiem celebrated a round of 16 victory. Jurij Rodionov also has chances for the red-white-red number one, he starts in Portugal against the Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Rodionov as 120th and Ofner as 122nd have each reached a new career high after recent good performances on Monday. At the top, Serbian Novak Djokovic replaced Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. If qualifier Ofner wins this time against Thiem (111th), who continues to hold only one win of the season, he overtakes him. Of course, Rodionov could still overtake his compatriot in the course of the tournament. The 23-year-old from Lower Austria has never played against the 35-year-old Ramos-Vinolas.

Two Austrians are involved in the women’s tour this week. Julia Grabher from Vorarlberg will play her opening game against Zhang Shuai from China (No. 10) on Monday (today) in the second match after 4:00 p.m. CEST. At the sand tournament in Bogota, Sinja Kraus will probably face number eight seeded Argentinian Nadia Podoroska on Tuesday after qualifying, the Argentinean is a French Open semi-finalist in 2020.
