If a game can sum up the Eurocup season of the Veolia Towers Hamburg, it was probably the last one. The narrow 79:87 defeat against Prometey, it hurt. But she once again demonstrated the resilience the Towers have shown in this competition – unlike the Bundesliga. Nevertheless, and everyone agreed, the orange leather didn’t play the most important role on Tuesday evening.

It was more bitter news that the Towers announced just before the jump ball: Captain Seth Hinrichs had to leave Riga for personal reasons. The 30-year-old is on his way to the USA and will be missing from Hamburg indefinitely. “There are things that are more important than sport,” emphasized Managing Director Marvin Willoughby.

Benka Barloschky only had six professionals from the BBL squad

This also applies to the round of 16 opponents from Slobozhanske. Due to the war against Ukraine, the top team plays their home games in Riga. “As an organization, our thoughts are with everyone affected by this war,” said head coach Benka Barloschky after the game, in which his skeleton squad (only six professionals from the BBL squad) sniffed the sensation. “We lost out a few times with our short rotation and we were still in the game the whole time,” said Lukas Meisner.

It was emblematic of this Eurocup season. Even against the heavyweights, the Towers usually did well. Surprises like against Tel Aviv (98:91) or Paris (91:74) were highlights of a disappointing season.

Despite the BBL record, there could be another European participation in the next season. After the season there will be a decision. But first, the six Eurocup victories, as many as last year, should be acknowledged. “I’m proud of this Eurocup trip,” said Meisner. And rightly so.
