Cuban archer Sarduy advances to the final in Copa Merengue

Havana, April 13 (ACN) The Cuban archer Maydenia Sarduy advanced to the women’s singles recurve bow final today, at the Archery Merengue Cupbased in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Sarduy had a great performance in the eliminatory matches of the 70-meter double lap, first with a 6-2 success against the Jamaican Emma Russ, to then beat the Peruvian Alexandra Zavala 6-4 and 6-0 in the quarterfinals against Puerto Rican Nilka Cotto.

Then, in the semifinals, she beat the Brazilian Natalie Maria Dias 6-2, to meet in the title discussion with the Ecuadorian Adriana Espinoza, who competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

This Wednesday, the athlete from Cuba had finished fourth with 613 points in the round that defined the pairings at Parque del Este.

The fight for the gold medal is scheduled for Saturday, April 15, the date on which, in addition, Hugo Franco will seek the bronze medal, who will compete with Adrián Muñoz, from Puerto Rico, according to the official site of the contest.

Franco lost 4-6 in one of the semifinals against the Guatemalan Thomas Flosshbach, so he could not advance to the duel for the crown.

Previously, he had eliminated Venezuelan Luis Edgardo Vivas 6-2 and Bolivian Alexander Mendoza 6-0, to later beat Peruvian Bruno Alejandro López 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

In other results of representatives of Cuba, Juan José Santisteban lost 0-6 in the quarterfinals against Flosshbach himself, while Javier Vega fell 5-6 against the Ecuadorian Juan Pablo Peralta in the same instance.
