Buffalo comes under pressure for 2023 and needs to use the Draft to rejuvenate the roster

It left a bitter taste: after starting the season flying, the Buffalo Bills fluctuated in production in 2022 and were eliminated in the playoffs at home by the Cincinnati Bengals, in a game in which they were dominated from beginning to end. With that, questions – fair, by the way – fell on the coaching staff led by Sean McDermott. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has taken a sabbatical from the NFL. The curious thing is that so far the franchise has not formalized anyone to take his place, indicating that McDermott should accumulate functions.

With a discreet offseason in terms of signings – Damien Harris and Taylor Rapp were the main additions – Buffalo needs to use the Draft to rejuvenate its roster without losing quality. Von Miller, Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde and Stefon Diggs are some of the names that will be at least 30 years old this season. Matt Milano and Tre’Davious White, other pillars of the roster, will have 29. It will be up to general manager Brandon Beane to renew the roster well, to the point of remaining competitive. Otherwise, the pressure on him and McDermott will be enormous.

You need to bring a different weapon

As much as Stefon Diggs is still on the highest shelf of his position, the arrival of age is a concern – even more so in a position that demands so much athleticism – and not waiting for the downfall to start to go after a piece that is occupying its space is paramount. And if you expected me to speak well of Gabriel Davis here, citing him as that name, you were wrong. Not that Reinaldo’s double is a bad player, far from it.

However, his fickleness is evident, something that has been with him since his college football days. In 5 of the year’s 17 games, he didn’t even reach 60 receiving yards. Not very versatile, the number 13 line up is basically open – he lacks the agility to play in the slot – and had a drop rate of 12%: he was the only wide receiver that surpassed 10%. Still within this group, he was fifth with the fewest yards per rushing route, staying at 1.43.

Davis has value, but the team needs to add a more complete player. Two names stand out as a possible choice on the 27th: Jalyn Hyatt, from Tennessee. Fast, he can stretch the field consistently, leaving Diggs with less vertical responsibility. Possessing good versatility, Hyatt played a lot in the college slot, and his ability to produce after the catch is solid: Buffalo was the fourth-worst team in passing yards after possession in 2022.

By Bijan, just changing the formula

Make no mistake, I adore Bijan Robinson and if the Bills select him #27, I won’t be able to say it’s a bad pick. However, running back is far from being a necessity for this team and choosing the running back from the University of Texas would be taking a big risk, betting more on pure talent than anything else. And then it would also take a systematic change for it to make any sense: Buffalo was the fourth lowest-running team in the league by % plays in the 2022 season.

The investment in the backfield would also be high, since in the last 4 years, three running backs were drafted on the 2nd. One of them, James Cook, is on the roster and is seen as a specialist in receiving passes, which in itself brings down the argument that Bijan would be the piece coming from the backfield as a receiver. Damien Harris is a force runner and has now joined the squad, which still has Nyheim Hines. You can’t rule out the possibility, but it seems unlikely that Robinson will be a target for the team.

Other needs are the linebacker position – Tremaine Edmunds went to the Chicago Bears – and competition on the offensive line, but that can be filled later. In the first round, the mission is clear: give Josh Allen a new weapon.
