Bayern eliminated by Freiburg in the quarter-finals of the German Cup

Bayern Munich are no longer in the running for the treble. The Bavarians lost at home on Tuesday evening in the quarter-finals of the German Cup against Freiburg (1-2). They had not lost at home since January 2022.

It’s a funny disappointment for Thomas Tuchel, three days after the technician’s ideal baptism in the Bundesliga against Dortmund (4-2), which had allowed his players to regain the lead in the Championship.

The former PSG coach had decided to renew the same eleven, with the exception of Joao Cancelo, who replaced Alphonso Davies as left-back. As on the opener against Dortmund, it was Dayot Upamecano who was initially decisive. The French defender victoriously took over a corner from Kimmich (19th), a goal curiously validated when he had clearly lifted his opponent to place his head.

The Fribourgeois contested in vain but they quickly consoled themselves, equalizing by Nicolas Höfler with a magnificent shot from the left, following a bad dismissal from Kingsley Coman (27th). The Bavarians pushed, Müller notably obtaining two big chances, the second saved on his line just before the break by Matthias Ginter (45th + 2).

Pavard touches the bar

Purring after the break, Bayern needed a new set piece to be dangerous: a free kick from Kimmich was extended with a header by Pavard, who found the crossbar (62nd). Tuchel brought in Gnabry, Musiala and Mané, without much result. The first still believed to deliver his own with a shot from the left just next door (89th).

Extra time was in sight but on a Friborg cross, Musiala protected himself with his hands and conceded a penalty. Lucas Höler transformed him with authority (90th + 5) and sent the fourth in the Bundesliga into the last four.
