The women’s basketball world championship will take place in Germany in 2026, while the world association awarded the men’s tournament to Qatar.

The World Basketball Federation (FIBA) awarded the tournaments in the Philippine capital Manila. In late summer 2026, 16 teams will initially play in four groups of four for the women’s World Cup title in Germany. The game is to be played in Berlin. The last time a women’s world championship was held in Germany was in 1998.

“The promotion of basketball for women and girls will be a focus of our work in the entire German basketball family in the coming years”said Ingo Weiss, President of the German Basketball Association.

In terms of sport, the European Championships in Slovenia are on the agenda for the German national team in the summer. The German team qualified for a European Championship for the first time in twelve years. In Ljubljana (15th to 25th June) the team of new national coach Lisa Thomaidis meets hosts Slovenia, title candidate France and Great Britain in the preliminary round.

Men’s World Cup 2027 in Qatar

The World Cup for men in 2027 will take place in Qatar, as the world association announced. All games of the tournament in four years are to be played in Doha. The host of the 2022 World Cup has hosted numerous major sporting events such as the 2015 Handball World Cup, the 2016 Cycling World Cup, the 2018 Gymnastics World Cup and the 2019 Athletics World Cup. The swimming world championships will come to Doha in 2024, and Qatar is also considered a potential candidate for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.

Qatar has been criticized on a number of levels, especially since the FIFA Executive Committee awarded the men’s World Cup in 2010. It is about the exploitation of guest workers, the criminalization of homosexuality, the lack of women’s rights and the corruption found by the US judiciary in the allocation of the 2010 tournament.

Massive human rights violations were documented during the construction of the stadiums and other infrastructure for the World Cup. FIFA and Qatar have repeatedly promised improvements and referred to reforms, but these have hardly been implemented to date.
