After the sportingly perfect 2022 season, the Schremser Beers started at the weekend as a promoted team in the second Bundesliga middle. After many years a reunion with old acquaintances and also new teams and players. The preparation was rather mixed due to the recent bad weather. But the start went very well.
Manager Thomas Rzepa took charge in the first game and started as a pitcher. Opponent Hallein turned out to be an equal opponent. Rzepa made a flawless start. Although Braves players kept coming back to base, they could hardly capitalize on it. Offensive things went well for the Schremsers right from the start, numerous hits and walks gave the Beers an early lead. In the first third, Salzburg took a 4:3 lead, but it didn’t last very long. After five innings, the Beers celebrated their first win in the second division. 15:5!

Against the Wels Centurions, the champions of the past four years, the grapes hung a lot higher. The new Beers import Alexander Dailey moved to the throwing hill. This delivered a solid performance, but fell a little short of expectations. He managed a few strike outs against a very compact group of Centurions, but he also let a lot of batters walk onto the bases. The outfield defense of the Waldviertel was also a bit holey. The third game of the day was won by the Centurions 9-0 against the Braves in a pitcher’s duel.
A split at the start of the season was a remarkable start for the Schremser Beers. You can be more than satisfied with suboptimal preparation with few training sessions and no preparatory games. The “rust” is still noticeable in the team, but this should decrease noticeably as the season progresses. The first of three home tournaments this season will take place on Saturday. The Wels Centurions and the Graz Dirty Sox are guests at the Beers Field in Eugenia. It starts at 10 a.m.
