Badminton: nearly 200 players expected at the Rodez national tournament

Even if the plateau is less high than before the Covid period, the Rodez club organizes its big annual event, Saturday April 29 and Sunday April 30 at the Ginette-Mazel gymnasium.

On the occasion of its 31st anniversary, the Rodez Badminton Club is organizing its 25th national tournament on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 April at the Ginette-Mazel gymnasium. Open to all, this event will welcome no fewer than 200 badminton players, some of whom are nationally ranked.

A two-day competition

Saturday will be the mixed doubles and the singles, men and women. The competition will begin with a pool round from 8 a.m. which will end in the afternoon. From 6 p.m., the semi-finals will begin. Then the last racket shots will be given around 8:30 p.m., with the mixed doubles, men’s singles and women’s singles finals, to close the first day.

On Sunday, the men’s and women’s doubles will appear on the badminton courts with the start of competition at 8 am. As for the day before, the tournament will begin with group matches in the morning and will continue with the semi-finals from 3 p.m. The shuttlecocks will finish flying a little earlier than the first day since the end of the tournament will be scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Among the participants, the headliners are to be found among the players classified nationally, such as Rémi Bansel (Blagnac) in men’s singles, Lylian Marsault (ASPTT Agen) registered in men’s doubles or even Léo Préchac (Pradines), in doubles mixed.

A tournament under reconstruction

The badistes will travel from neighboring departments to Rodez to play a tournament there which had suffered two cancellations due to the Covid. Last year, the event made a comeback and welcomed some 200 competitors.

Mathieu Montels, member of the office of the organizing club, saw this period of nothingness having negative effects on the level of the competition. “There is less level than before, does he notice. This year we have players 600th or 500th in the national ranking; whereas before the Covid, we received 5 or 6 French top 100s. However, he hopes to see the spectators come in large numbers “for fun and to see beautiful badminton”.
