Australian GP under fire after debris hits F1 fan: “Could have been terrible” | formula 1

Will Sweet, an Australian F1 fan, injured his arm when Kevin Magnussen’s (Haas) crash sent debris flying into the crowd at Melbourne Park.

“It hit my arm and I was standing there bleeding,” Sweet told radio station 3AW. “Fortunately, my arm covered my neck. If the debris had hit my fiancée, it would have been right on her head.”

“The debris was very sharp. If it had hit me at a different angle it could have been terrible,” he added.

The race organizers were already under fire because a number of fans had entered the circuit towards the end of the race, while the F1 cars were still running.

The FIA immediately demanded a recovery plan from the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC). “There was significant danger to spectators, race officials and drivers,” the stewards said. “It could have had disastrous consequences.”

At the 2001 Australian Grand Prix, a track marshal was killed when he was hit by a tire from Jacques Villeneuve’s car following a crash involving Ralf Schumacher.
