Arturo Peña wins the Finca Valpiedra Tournament

Arturo Peña won the first day of the ‘Rioja&Vino’ Golf Tournaments, in the ‘Scratch’ modality, held at the Logroño Golf Course, with more than a hundred participants. The tournament organized by Diario LA RIOJA, through the specialized portal lomejordelvinoderioja.com, has the collaboration of the General Directorate for Sport of the Government of La Rioja, the Etilisa company and the Finca Valpiedra, Montecillo, Perica, Marco Real and Ramón wineries Bilbao. This year the competition is played individually, the so-called ‘stableford’, unlike in 2022, when it was played in pairs. In addition, within each day three categories will be established: two for men, first (handicap from 0 to 15) and second (handicap from 15.1 to 26.4), and one for women.

Last Saturday’s day was played on the 18 holes of the Logroño Golf Course with some cold and rain in the first minutes of the competition and with sun and heat in the second part of the development of the game. Arturo Peña won the Finca Valpiedra Tournament with 37 points, a very tight result against Diego Zulueta, second with 36. Kevin Zimmerman was third, further away, with 32. In the ‘Scratch’ category the first woman was Sara Isabel Blanco ( 24), followed by Nuria Abadía (20) and Laura Pérez (19). On the other hand, in the men’s first category classification, the best was Diego Zulueta, with 42 points, the same as Gonzalo Cadarso and Francisco Javier Bello, second and third, respectively. In ladies, the best was Inmaculada Camprovín, who also tied at 43 points with the second and third classified, Loreto Calvo and Verónica Santamaría, respectively. Finally, in the second male category, the most outstanding was José Benito Pascual, with 42 points, the same as the second, Alan Forsyth, while the third, Francisco Román, added 40.

As usual, various prizes were also awarded for the most outstanding performances on certain holes. The La Rioja Government Award for the Closest Ball on Hole 5 went to Nacho Lasheras. The Etilisa Award for the Closest Ball on Hole 8 went to Guzmán Zulueta. And the Lomejordelvinoderioja.com Award for the Closest Ball on Hole 13 went to Julia Martínez. A novelty that has been established this year is that, at the beginning of each day, the participants can collaborate by delivering donations to the Food Bank of La Rioja.

The day ended with the awards ceremony for the Finca Valpiedra Tournament at the Campo de Golf de Logroño social center, after which the winery offered a tasting of its wines led by Leticia Villegas and the Al Par restaurant offered a tasting of its wines. The next appointments will be June 17 (Montecillo), July 15 (Perica), October 28 (Marco Real) and November 11 (Ramón Bilbao).
