Amazon Studio announced that A league apart Season 2 will be officially ordered for Prime Video’s sports comedy-drama remake of the beloved film. However, this will be its final season, which is being developed as a four-episode limited series. The renewal comes less than a year since the series launched its 8-episode first season, which is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
“We are deeply proud of the work Abbi, Will, the cast and crew have done to reimagine A league apart which has produced an incredibly loyal fanbase and earned many well-deserved recognitions and accolades,” Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, said in a statement. “After hearing what Abbi, Will and the writing team have planned for the new story in this wonderful series, we’re excited for our fans to see what’s next.”
The series stars Abbie Jacobson, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez, Nick Offerman, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Kate Berlant, Kendall Johnson, Kelly McCormack, Alex Désert, Priscilla Delgado, Aaron Jennings, Molly Ephraim, Melanie Field and Dale Dickey. Additionally, 95-year-old original All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) player Maybelle Blair will return as a consultant in the upcoming second episode.
“A league apart evokes the joyous spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic while expanding the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball,” reads the synopsis. “The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new set of characters as they forge their own paths onto the pitch, both in the League and outside of it. -this.”
A league apart is produced by Jacobson and Will Graham. It hails from Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with Field Trip Productions. Executive producers are Field Trip’s Hailey Wierengo, Elizabeth Koe and Jamie Babbit, who directed the pilot.
