268 Mexicans renounce their nationality, especially athletes – El Sol de México

Since 2016, when the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) determined that Mexicans by birth and naturalization they could renunciate to be, a total of 268 people decided to leave the country to become citizens of other nations, according to information provided to El Sol de México, via the National Transparency Platform.

The year 2021 is the one in which more Mexicans renounced the nationalitywith 80 in total, followed by 2018, with 69 cases and 2019, with 52. Last year there were 22 requests that the Chancellery received and only one in 2016.

In all cases, the reason expressed by the applicants, according to the information of the SREIt is because it suited their interests.

Approximately one third have been athletes who considered that the incentives from the sports authorities Mexican were not enough. “It must be taken into account that once the Proof of Renunciation of Mexican Nationality, the SRE issues an administrative impediment, which prohibits the holder from using his Mexican passport. In the same way, it notifies the Ministry of the Interior, the National Electoral Institute, to the Tax Administration Service and the Civil Registry office, for all legal effects that may apply”, explains the federal agency on its website.

One case is Aidee Acosta. Born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, who fell in love with an Israeli citizen, who in order to marry her asked her to renounce being Mexican, adopt Israeli nationality and convert to Judaism. In an interview with El Sol de México, she tells that it was not easy for her, but the laws of Israel prohibit the right to property to foreigners, so he had no choice but to give up being mexicana.

“When I agreed to marry my husband, I knew perfectly well that I had to give up several things, my family, my country and even my nationality, but it was a decision made with the heart because I fell in love and that was convenient for my future and that of my children. Three years ago I renounced being Mexican and it feels strange because now when I go to Mexico to visit my family I enter as a foreigner; however I believe that humans are actually citizens of the world and we must adapt to the place in which we live”, she stated.

The opportunity to employment is another reason why Mexicans and Mexicans They have decided to renounce their nationality. Julio is one of them.

In 2021 he won a scholarship to study computing in Japan, thanks to which he was able to get a job in a company in that country that offers “much better Labor conditions to local citizens than to foreigners, and even to those who have more than one nationality”, so he did not hesitate to renounce being Mexican to marry his Japanese wife and acquire the nationality of that country.

“I knew that in Mexico, as a Mexican, I could never reach the job level and life that I have achieved here. You do have that feeling of remorse, of betrayal, no, but it is also a reality that you have to take advantage of opportunities and, in my case, circumstances led me to make the decision. I don’t even know if later I would ask to get it back, maybe if things change here in the end and I have to go back to my country, ”he said.

In accordance with Mexican law, if the person who voluntarily renounced their Mexican nationality wants to recover it, they will have to do so through the Declaration of Mexican Nationality by Birth procedure, or submit to the procedure to obtain Mexican nationality by naturalization, as the case may be. . So far, according to the information provided by the SRE, no one has requested to recover their nationality.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not have records of people who have decided to renounce being Mexican for political reasons.
