Varane: “I will retire at Madrid, at United or at Lens”

Raphael Varane left Real Madrid in the summer of 2021 to sign for Manchester United. The French defender has a contract with the English club until 2025, when he will be 32 years old. Despite the fact that there is still a long way to go, the central defender is already beginning to think about the club where he will hang up his boots. In an interview with GQ, Varane surprises by citing the white club as one of the options he is considering to retire. “I will finish my career either at Madrid, or at Manchester, or at Lens (his first team). The certain thing is that I will not play in another club”, declares Varane, who, however, is aware that the option of returning to the white team seems remote: “Madrid seems complicated to me, because you don’t usually return to it. The most probable thing today is that it ends up in Manchester or in Lens”.

It is clear that the next step in his career is something that is already on Varane’s mind. However, he has time to decide and does not want to rush: “I have been playing football since I was seven years old, so inevitably there is a bit of apprehension, but not fear. Like any important decision in life, it requires careful thought and will be done step by step”, he concludes.

Varane arrived at Manchester United in exchange for around 50 million euros. In the German club he has played 56 games, has scored a goal and has given an assist.
