Van der Poel conquers Milan-San Remo with Pogacar fourth

MADRID, 18 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) conquered the Milan-San Remo this Saturday, the first ‘monument’ of the season, ahead of the Italian Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and the Belgian Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) .

Van der Poel, winner of the Tour of Flanders in 2020 and 2022, scored his second classic of this magnitude, holding the attack of Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) at the Poggio, with a dizzying descent towards victory.

The Dutchman won the same race as his grandfather, Raymond Poulidor, 62 years ago, to open his record this season. Van Aert pushed to fight for victory but Van der Poel had the appointment scheduled on the calendar, after playing squire in the Tirreno-Adriatico.

UAE Team Emirates Tim Wellens and Pogacar took a dangerous approach to the event, crossing Italy, on the Cipressa, but on the ascent to Poggi, Van der Poel accelerated without response and, furthermore, nothing was saved on the descent to win alone with 15 seconds on the chasing trio.
