Tunisia qualified… under the projectiles

Despite a particularly hostile context in Benghazi, Tunisia validated its qualification for CAN 2023 by winning the derby against Libya (1-0) on Tuesday during the 4e playoff day.

Already goalscorer first leg Friday (3-0)Jouini did it again by quickly opening the scoring with a header from a corner kick by Ali Maâloul (0-1, 12e). Problem: then, Jalel Kadri’s men never managed to take shelter and Jouini (43rd), Skhiri (51st), Ben Romdhane (60th) and Jaziri (88th) all missed break points. The Eagles of Carthage could have paid for these failures at a high price when the opposing free kick crashed into the post (71e) !

But what we will remember above all, unfortunately, is above all the intolerable behavior of a part of the Libyan public, who never stopped throwing various projectiles, mainly bottles of water, in the direction of visitors. So much so that dozens and dozens of bottles covered the playing surface in the final minutes… Tunisian goalkeeper Dahmen was hit several times but it didn’t really move the referee, who even sanctioned him with a yellow card at the end as he tried to dodge one of these projectiles…

Libya almost KO

This is by no means an excuse, but it must be said that the Knights of the Mediterranean have reason to be frustrated, they who find themselves almost eliminated following this defeat in the derby, Equatorial Guinea having taken the best of Botswana (3-2) in the other game of the group.
