Toñi Barrionuevo, bronze in the Andalusian Grappling

The athlete from Alhaur Toñi Barrionuevo Gómez won a commendable bronze medal in the Andalusian Grappling Championship -fight without a kimono- in the senior category of less than 64 kilos. The wrestler from Costa del Sol also finished fourth in the fight with a kimono, in both modalities. It must be taken into account that Toñi attended this championship as a beginner.

Grappling is a fighting modality that seeks to have the opponent under control without making any blow, and then win the fight. This method of fighting is based on techniques of grappling, strangulation and dislocation of the adversary’s extremities.

Used in various martial arts (judo, wrestling, jiu-jitsu…)is also used very frequently in submission sports, where fights can be terminated without the need for gravity blows.

In 2006, Grappling joined FILA (International Federation of Associated Wrestling), who defined it as a fighting style (also called submission restling or No Gi fighting -without kimono-) that consists of controlling the opponent, forcing him to surrender by recognizing that he is unable to let go without injuring himself.
